ICD Coding Workshop: Introduction to the use of hospital statistics

Statistics New Zealand, the Ministry of Health, and ACC collaborated to organise two one-day workshops on 26 and 27 August 2010, on the use of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) coding of hospital statistics.

The workshop provided an introduction to:

  • how New Zealand administrative hospital and mortality statistics are coded using the ICD-10-AM classification system
  • how the ICD-10-AM classification system has changed in New Zealand over the last 10 years
  • implications of changes in the classification for how injuries are recorded, and issues that have arisen with the changes
  • how the data may be accessed
  • correct use of the hospital data, and the common issues that agencies see in how hospital data and other agency data (for example ACC claims data) is used and reported.

The workshop programme and presentations are available above for downloading.
