Christchurch's population decreases after earthquakes
Key facts
In the June 2011 year:
Christchurch city's population decreased by 8,900 people (2.4 percent).
58 of New Zealand's 67 territorial authority areas experienced population growth.
The fastest-growing territorial authority areas were Selwyn district (up 3.9 percent) and Queenstown-Lakes district (up 3.2 percent).
Canterbury region's population decreased by 5,000 people (0.9 percent).
New Zealand's other 15 regions all experienced population growth.
The fastest-growing regions were Auckland, Tasman, and Nelson (all up 1.6 percent).
